BACTOLiVE® AZO

BACTOLiVE® AZO is a seed and soil inoculum for active nitrogen fixation in the rhizosphere of non-leguminous crops, like cereals (wheat, barley etc), maize, rape, potatoes, sugarbeet, sunflower, fruit trees, berry crops, vegetables, ornamentals, grasses, turf etc. BACTOLiVE® AZO is approved for organic farming.

BACTOLiVE® AZO contains nitrogen fixing bacteria Azospirillum brasiliense (2 strains) and Azospirillum lipoferum, which are associative symbiotic rhizosphere microorganism. They can biologically fix air nitrogen up to 50 kg/ha and year, and make this nitrogen available to plants. Thus, by application of BACTOLiVE AZO, mineral nitrogen can be saved.

Azospirillum species are gram negative (left); they live in associative symbiosis on surface of plant roots (centre) and move with soil water from root to roots (right)

Apart from N-fixing, BACTOLiVE® AZO has plant growth promoting effects (IAA), and induces tolerances against diseases and drought.

BACTOLiVE® AZO is a powder formulation (finely milled peat) in which the gram-negative, sensitive bacteria can survive long time at ambient conditions (2 years storage stability). Each bag contains 400 g, which is the amount needed for 1 ha. The concentration of bacteria is > 109 CFU per g. The inoculum is applied in two different ways: seed treatment and soil drench treatment. BACTOLiVE® AZO bacteria are motile; after bringing bacteria to the soil, they move in the soil water from root to new roots and multiply quickly.

ORDER CONDITIONS:

Please consider that it may take up to 6-8 weeks to manufacture BACTOLiVE AZO, and that only limited quantities are on stock. Hence, please order in advance.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES:

Always work at a shady site – do not expose the inoculum to sunshine – Azospirillum are sensitive to sunlight.

SEED TREATMENT

  • Disperse the content of the bag in 0.5 to 1 L clean chlor-free water in a clean receptacle and prepare a slurry; volume of water depends on seed / ha.

  • Distribute the slurry onto the seed (needed per 1 ha) – mix thoroughly  until all seed is evenly covered

  • Plant the treated seed as soon as possible; cover seed to avoid sunlight

  • Inoculation with BACTOLiVE AZO can be combined with micro-nutrient, or aminoacid or other biofertilizer application to seeds

Each bag with BACTOLiVE® AZO contains 400 g inoculum. This amount is for 1 ha, either as seed treatment or soil drench. For soil drench, the Azospirillum bacteria must be released (separated) from the peat, so that a liquid can be sprayed

SOIL DRENCH / SPRAYING

For soil drench, the Azospirillum bacteria must be released (separated) from the peat, so that a liquid can be sprayed

  • For releasing bacteria from peat, disperse  content of bag in 10 L chlor-free clean water, and let for 4 h, or over night; stir frequently and heavily during this time. Then sieve through clean coarse cloth tissue or fine sieve so to filter peat; rinse peat with water.

  • Collect all filtered water that contains the bacteria and diluted with 1000 L water  per ha and spray near plant roots. Application can be at or after planting (also directly into the planting furrow), or can also perfectly be applied by drip irrigation. Spraying via nozzles with normal spraying equipment is also possible - dilute with minimum 1000 L water per ha, and irrigate thereafter, or apply before rainfall.

  • Repeat application 4-8 weeks after first application.

  • Always carry out applications late in afternoon or in evening, so to avoid direct sunshine.

  • If possible irrigate thereafter or apply short before expected rainfall.

BACTOLiVE® AZO increases availability of nitrogen for crops in a biological way; it fixes air nitrogen.
